Subaru has a plug-in hybrid coming, and the Japanese make announced the electrification technology will make its way to the Crosstrek first.

On Friday, Subaru dished out preliminary details on the Crosstrek Hybrid, its official title. The hybrid system will work as both a regular hybrid, to run on electricity and gasoline, or in a pure battery-electric mode. Subaru did not disclose range estimates in the announcement.

As previously rumored, Subaru will adopt the Toyota Hybrid System (THS) to work with the Crosstrek Hybrid’s four-cylinder engine and all-wheel-drive system. Subaru said a new transmission will debut with the Crosstrek Hybrid as well.

This won’t be the first time Subaru will offer a Crosstrek Hybrid, however. The brand introduced a Crosstrek Hybrid in the crossover’s previous generation. Though, the vehicle ultimately flopped, likely due to insignificant fuel economy improvements over the standard Crosstrek: 31 mpg combined for the hybrid and 29 mpg for the standard vehicle.

Subaru did not provide additional information on specifications or prices, but the 2019 Crosstrek Hybrid will reach dealerships toward the end of this year. Now, we can’t help but wonder what Subaru has the “Evoltis” name trademarked and reserved for.
